Suicidal ideation is a symptom that can be assessed and treated but can, obviously, be lethal. Suicidal ideation can be thought of on a spectrum from having a passing thought that you’d like to go to sleep and never wake up to having a very specific plan with intent to act. Mild to moderate suicidal ideation can often be addressed in a small, personal practice like Essential Mental Health. However, chronic suicidal ideation, a history of recent or multiple attempts, and/or moderate to severe suicidal ideation would be best treated by an agency with more intensive services. For example, an organization that would be available to help with crisis that occurs between scheduled appointments would be necessary and that is not available at Essential Mental Health.
